How Well Can Maple Leafs Domi Cover For Matthews?
Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

As the Toronto Maple Leafs gear up for a crucial Game 5 against the Bruins in Boston, they face the prospect of taking the ice without their star center, Auston Matthews. While battling an illness that sidelined him from practice on Monday, Matthews traveled with the team but remains questionable for Tuesday night’s game.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed hopefulness regarding Matthews’ recovery, stating, “We’re hopeful he’s available and feeling good and back to himself.” That said, reading between the lines, things didn’t sound hopeful. Uncertainty lingers.

It Looks as if Max Domi Gets the Call in Matthews’ Place

Matthews’ absence was noticeable in practice. Adjustments to cover for his absence were evident. Specifically, Max Domi filled in for Matthews at the center position. He also covered for Matthews to take over his position on the No. 1 power-play unit. This shuffle underscores the void Matthews’ condition might leave in the lineup.

Known for his scoring ability, Matthews has recently struggled to find the back of the net. Despite a high number of 34 shots on goal, he’s scored just one goal in his last six games. He’s also registered just two assists over that stretch.

As If the Maple Leafs Were Not Already in Tons of Trouble

The impact of potentially missing Matthews extends well past reshuffling lines and power play units. Suddenly, the team is challenged to test its depth and scoring strength. Toronto can rely on talents like John Tavares, who will likely take on the first-line center role. As well, other key players include Mitch Marner and William Nylander. That said, the absence of a world-class talent like Matthews is felt deeply.

That’s especially true with a playoff series hanging in the balance. The Maple Leafs’ ability to adapt and rally without their leading scorer could very well define their fortunes in this pivotal postseason clash.

The upside is that if they can win on the road without him, they’d return to Toronto with some measure of confidence. That could help. As a Maple Leafs fan, I’m looking for any sliver of hope possible.
