New York Giants bringing in undrafted free agent that the rest of the NFL forgot to draft
Nick Wosika-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 NFL Draft is a wrap and many undrafted free agents are still trying to find a home in the league. Many have already signed with teams over the last few days. Others have received invites to rookie camps with various teams in hopes to prove themselves and earn a contract.

One underrated undrafted free agent general manager Joe Schoen invited to the New York Giants' upcoming Rookie Minicamp who stands out above the rest is former Minnesota wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell. Avid college football fans are likely familiar with him because he rather notably spent seven years with the Golden Gophers. Now he'll be trying to land a spot with the New York Giants in the coming weeks.

Chris Autman-Bell, WR Minnesota

Why did he spend seven years in college? And why is he underrated? Chris Autman-Bell began his college career as a three star recruit back in 2017. He sat out his first year, redshirting to save future eligibility, but quickly made his presence felt sharing targets with two future NFL wide receivers in Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson.

Autman-Bell spent three straight seasons playing the WR3 and WR2 roles for Minnesota, but then broke out as the clear leader of the team in 2021 when he accounted for 37% of the Golden Gophers receiving production. He was on an early pace to put up 1000 yards in 2022, but then he tore a ligament in his knee and damaged his meniscus as well. After that he was never really the same for Minnesota, spending much of last season fighting back to get 100% healthy. However, now that he's entering year two post-injury he may provide some of that spark that helped him average nearly 16 yards per reception for his career.

Chris Autman-Bell's fit with the Giants

The Giants just drafted Malik Nabers to be the focal point of their receiving offense with their first round pick. However, outside of Nabers the Giants are lacking significant difference makers at the position and only have one other receiver with any size to speak of (Isaiah Hodgins). At 6'1", 210 pounds Autman-Bell would give the Giants another outside receiver with size and contested catch ability.

Autman-Bell caught 70% of his contested targets in his peak 2021 season, and posted decent NFL projectable rate stats in categories like yards per route run and receiving market share in both 2021 and 2022 that could indicate he should have success if given opportunity. Given how desperately the Giants need to improve their offense, Autman-Bell should get a real look this summer if he performs well in the Giants Rookie Minicamp.
